As a continuation of his popular course on the history of New York theater, John Viars will lead the class on a multi-media journey of the composers, lyricists, playwrights, performers and shows that comprise that great, uniquely American institution—the Broadway Musical. From Rodgers and Hart, through Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, all the way to Jason Robert Brown and Lin-Manuel Miranda, with a few side trips to Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams, this class will give students an understanding of the social, political, economic and entertainment value of contemporary American theater.
